2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference
The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly referred to as COP27, was the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference, held from 6 November until 20 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
And we are delighted to share that Priyanka Chahal, a Student in the 9th semester (General Medicine) Participated in COP27 as a delegate. Priyanka is a Researcher and Young Scientist at CIS. She participated in COP27 in several panel discussions and pavilions reflecting her leadership qualities. Having a background in the research field, Priyanka attended the Health pavilion at COP27 where among other health experts and professionals she interacted and led the discussions.
On the inauguration of the Climate Implementation Summit, more than 100 World Leaders gathered at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh Egypt to work towards the implementation of existing climate agreements. World leaders were welcomed by Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Secretary General of the UN Antonio Guterres. This time COP27 was special by having huge participation of Young people across the world with country state’s participation.
World leaders like the President of the USA Joe Biden and the Prime minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak also attended the conference.
Priyanka says: Climate change is a global health problem already impacting millions of people around the world. And the presence of Health professionals in climate negotiations is imperative.
Our student Priyanka Chahal worked with the Health working group at COP27 in the presence of different health experts from WHO and other stakeholders.
She elaborated that Climate change is a major factor in the emergence of diseases in new parts of the world. The survival, reproduction, abundance, and distribution of pathogens, vectors, and hosts can be influenced by the changes associated with global heating. Many newly emerging infectious diseases arise in these tropical regions where the warm temperatures suit the life cycles of both pathogens and vectors. Vector-borne pathogens pose an increasing risk to human health. And now they’re on the rise.
And We are proud to say that “S. Tentishev Asian Medical Institute” and Kyrgyzstan have been represented at COP27 in the health pavilion and in the youth leadership space.
We wish the best of luck to Priyanka in her future endeavors and in the research field.
